HONG KONG: PARLIAMENTARY VISIT SPONSORED BY MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

1. Mr Royle may like to have advance notice that the Ministry of Defence are arranging their usual annual visit to the Services in Hong Kong by a party of up to 7 MPs/Peers from 12 17 September. They will previously be visiting the ANZUK Force in Singapore. We do not yet know the names. The Ministry of Defence are asking the Commander, British Forces, to obtain the Political Adviser's views on calls to be made in Hong Kong etc.

We have asked the Ministry of Defence to ensure that we are consulted about arrangements for briefing the party. You will remember that there were criticisms in Hong Kong that last year's party were not properly briefed, for example on the defence contribution.
