SHAW, Michael, M.P. (Scarborough and Whitby)

Michael (Norman) Shaw was born in 1920.

He was educated at Sedbergh. He is married and has three Mr. Shaw is a chartered accountant; he was made a J.P. in November 1953.

He was Chairman of the Young Conservatives (Yorkshire Area) from April 1950 to January 1951. From 1950-52 he was Chairman of the Brighouse and Spenborough United Liberal and Conservative Association and he has been a member of the Yorkshire Area Finance and General Purposes Committee since 1950. In 1959 he was elected Vice-Chairman of the Yorkshire Provincial Area, the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations. He was Chairman of Yorkshire Provincial Area, April 1965 to June 1966. From 1962-63 he was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of Labour.

In October 1952 he was adopted as Prospective Conservative Candidate for Dewsbury. Unsuccessful at the General Election of May 1955 he reduced the Socialist majority. In 1956 he was adopted for Brighouse and Spenborough, and at the General Election 1959 he reduced the Socialist majority to 47 votes. He was re-adopted in December 1959. At the by-election in 1960 he was elected M.P. for
