Q

The PUS asked us to look again at the dates for

Princess Alexandra's proposed visit to China after the

Secretary of State's return from Peking. We also need to

get in touch with Mr Angus Ogilvy to let him know how matters

stand.

Background

2.

The idea that he might take Princess Alexandra on a

private visit to Peking was put to Mr Ogilvy by the PUS in

September. After consulting the Princess Mr Ogilvy agreed,

and July 1973 was fixed as a provisional date. The Secretary

of State recommended to Her Majesty The Queen that during

his own visit to Peking he should sound out Chinese reactions

to such a proposal. This advice was accepted, but Sir

Martin Charteris asked that dates should not be mentioned as

The Queen thought that there should be no hurry for any member

of the Royal Family to visit China, and if, as seemed likely

at that time, the Prime Minister were to receive an invitation

to visit China himself in the autumn of 1973, it would be

more appropriate for the Princess to go there later.
