In 1947 he
Sir Murray MacLehose was born on 16 October, 1917, and was
educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford. He
was appointed to the Colonial Service for service in Malaya
in 1939 and appointed Vice-Consul at Amoy in 1941.
He was
seconded to the Royal Navy for service in China 1943 and in
1944 was appointed Acting Consul at Foochow.
transferred to the Foreign Service and was appointed Acting
Consul at Hankow the same year. He returned to the Foreign
Office in 1950 and in 1951 was appointed First Secretary
(Commercial) at Prague. In 1954 he was seconded to the
Commonwealth Relations Office for service in Wellington and
in 1957 appointed First Secretary (Commercial) at Paris.
In 1959 he was promoted Counsellor and seconded to the
Colonial Office for service as Political Adviser, Hong Kong.
In 1963 he returned to the Foreign Office as Head of Far
Eastern Department and in July 1965 was appointed Private
Secretary to the Foreign Secretary.
In 1967 he was appointed
HM Ambassador at Saigon. He was appointed HM Ambassador in
Copenhagen in November 1969. He was appointed to his present
post in November 1971.
In 1947 he married Margaret Noel Dunlop. They have twin
daughters born in 1949.
Sir Murray was made a MBE in 1945, a CMG in 1964 and a KCMG
in 1971.
