At Anthony Royle's suggestion I
undertook to look at two things connected with Michael Wright's office in Pall Mall:-

A car. Would it not be a good thing for Hong Kong if their man in London had an official car and flew an official flag?
is disposed of.
His title. Was not 'Administrative Commissioner for the Government of Hong Kong in London' rather infra dig having regard to the U.K. connotation of 'administrative'? Would not
'Commissioner' tout court be better?
I understand that the car business Michael hires a car with his flag on it whenever he wants one, and neither needs nor wants more. Michael says Mr. Royle knows all about this and is content.
I have consulted some voluminous files about the title, and discover that the odd- sounding name was David Trench's rather desperate attempt in October 1968 to hit on some name to which the F.C.0. as then constituted could not contrive an objection. Carter's letter to David of 4th October
'68 (HWB 3/20) is a fair example of the file's contents gobbledygook in the highest traditions of the combined three services.
