Clause 4 of the bill therefore amends section 11(5) of the principal Ordinance to enable an Immigration Officer to grant ex- tensions of stay and to impose, cancel or vary any conditions of stay.

Clauses 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the bill amend sections 5(6), 5(8), 24(2), 24(4), 25(3), 25(4), 33(1), 35(3) and 35(4) of the prin- cipal, Ordinance to enable any Immigration Assistant, in addition to an Immigration Officer, to exercise and perform the various powers and functions mentioned in those sections, viz

to require a person being examined under section 4(1) to declare and produce any documents relevant for the purposes of the examina- tion;

to give directions for preventing any person from evading exami nation under section 4(1);

to place a person on board any ship or aircraft in which he is to be re- moved from Hong Kong under section 18;

to take a person in custody to the place at which he is to be removed by land under section 18;

to place any person in respect of whom directions have been given under section 25(2) on board any ship or aircraft in which he is to be removed;

to take a person in respect of whom a removal order or a deportation order is in force in custody to the place at which he is to be removed by land;

to require the captain of a ship or aircraft to take such steps as may be necessary to prevent any person who is to be removed from Hong Kong or has been refused permission to land in Hong Kong from landing from the ship or aircraft before it leaves Hong Kong;

to take any detained person in custody to and from any place where his atten- dance is required;

to arrest without warrant any person required or authorised to be detained by or under the Ordinance.
