Dear Lucille

Your letter of 31 July, which I assume was sent with your husband's knowledge,

has caused me some astonishment.

You say that because of some disturbing news you and your husband have

received from the New Hebrides you wish to talk to me before a decision

is reached and that you do not want another "disaster". I am not clear

what news or what disasters you have in mind, but if your object is to

talk to me before a decision is reached on the filling of the two new judicial posts in Hong Kong (in respect of which your husband has already expressed an interest) in order to give me your or your husband's comments

on other possible candidates for the two prospective appointments, I

regret that I cannot receive such a communication.

Should you or your husband be in possession of any fact which, in the

interests of the Colony, ought to be brought to the notice of the appro-

priate authorities, you or he should address your communication to the

Governor.

Hours

sincerely

Antony Rushford
