2. As you will recall, the Service Departments

provided assistance to the Hong Kong Government in

connection with the communist-inspired disturbances

which occurred in the Colony during 1967. The assis-

tance consisted of a variety of measures reinforce-

ments, the loan of specialist troops, additional

transport, stores, works services and so on- and I

am pleased to say that after prolonged discussions

between our Command Secretary in Hong Kong and the

Colony's authorities, with two exceptions all these

matters have been satisfactorily disposed of and the

appropriate payment has been made by the Hong Kong

Government to defence votes.

3. The two exceptions, however, are not inconsider-
