History questions set by the samo school include "What is the great historical

significance of the victory of the new democratic revolution in China?" and

"Describe the necessity for the continuation of the revolution under the dictator-

ship of the proletariat with reference to the historical experience learned from

the international communist movement". It was expected in 1971 that a more

serious effort would be made to improve academic standards with a view to obtain-

ing better results in public examinations. This was not because the communists

had come to terms with the "slavish educational system", but because more teachers

were needed to fill posts created by the expansion programme and a Certifcate of
