31.

But the young teachers in communist schools have one great asset lacking

in so many teachers in other schools enthusiasm. They believe they are teaching

a way of life and not an academic discipline. They are deeply involved with their

pupils and spend their free time organising extra mural activities, visiting pupils'

homes, taking part in study trips and comfort miscions and generally involving

themselves in their pupils' lives. Since they are mostly without families the

low pay (some still only receive HK$240 per month plus accommodation at the school)

and long hours do not really bother them.

Students

32.

The majority of the students at Hong Kong's communist schools are drawn

from families which have some loyalty towards, or dependance upon the C.P.G. and

may be categorised as:-

(a) employees of communist organisations;

(b) members of communist trade unions:

(၁)

dealers in mainland products, from large-scale importers

down to hawkers;

(a)

fisherfolk whose vessels operate in Chinese waters under

a dual licence; and

(e)

residents of border areas and those parts of the New

Territories which are traditionally pro-communist.

33.

In addition to the above categories there are many children whose

parents send them to communist schools for practical rather than political reasons.

These practical reason: may include convenient location, low fees, better extra-

curricular activities and the desire for their children to have an entirely

Chinese "patriotic" education free from the more deplorable Western influences.
