Alec Douglas Home has asked me to thank you for sending him a copy of your letter of 22 December to John Davies.
I understand that the Department of Trade and Industry will be replying to you soon but I wish to confirm that in reaching their decision on cotton textiles imports for 1972 the Government had very much in mind the interests of Hong Kong as a major supplier of cotton textiles to Britain. As John Davies said in the House of Commons on 8 December, we believe that these interests will be at least as well served in the course of 1972 by the more stable situation which should be created by the Government's new policy. talks with Hong Kong officials will resume on 10 January As you know, and at these we shall be examining in detail the impli- cations of the Government's decision for Hong Kong's trade in cotton textiles with Britain.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Anthony Grant.
