1. As you may know, Mr. Royle has accepted an invitation from M. Jean de Lipkowski, Secretary of State at the Quai D'Orsay to visit Paris from 21-23 March. M. de Lipkowski has recently visited Djakarta, where he took the chair at a meeting of all French Ambassadors in the Far East and south east Asia. Lipkowski has said that he would like to inform Mr. Royle of the results of this meeting, which I gather discussed French policy in the Far East, with particular regard to the effects of President Nixon's visit to Peking.
2. It has been agreed that Mr. Royle will be accompanied to the meeting only by Sir Christopher Soames. Mr. Royle has said that he does not require a full set of briefs for his talks. I should however be grateful if you would let me have, by Monday afternoon, 20 March, a Position paper on our current relations with countries within the purview of your Department. Mr. Royle would also be glad of a list of questions to the French on their policy to which you would like answers. He will do his best to obtain them.
