HONG KONG'S FUTURE STATUS IN GATT

Brussels telegram No 2139, Geneva Telegram No 654 and No 30 to Hong Kong and Hong Kong telegram No 1152 refer.

2. These telegrams concern the postponement of the EEC/GATT Affairs Committee from 30 November to 14 December. This is the meeting at which it is proposed the future position of Hong Kong in the GATT should be discussed. Whilst it is unfortunate that there is this delay, it is agreed that there is no better alternative than waiting for the meeting on 14 December. Hong Kong telegram 1152 confirms their acceptance of this.

3. I have spoken to Miss Elliott, DTI, Mr Sellers, Hong Kong Government Office, Mr Laidler, EID and Mr Clarke, TPD. The latter will discuss with Miss Elliott which of them should send a telegraphic reply.
