JOINT FCO/ODA DEPENDENT TERRITORIES DIVISION

Announcement No 398 of 26 November 1971 gave details about the establishment of a joint FCO/ODA Division to deal with all aspects of work on the dependent territories. The following organisational changes have been brought into effect.

2. Atlantic and Indian Ocean Department has been abolished, and its responsibilities distributed as follows:-

i. Responsibility for Seychelles and the British Indian Ocean Territory has been transferred to Hong Kong Department (Mr E O Laird) to be renamed Hong Kong and Indian Ocean Department. This department will be regarded as a joint department in respect of Hong Kong, the Seychelles and BIOT;

ii. Responsibility for the Falkland Islands, British Antarctic Territories, St Helena, Tristan da Cunha and Ascension has been transferred to West Indian Department (Mr N B J Huijsman) to be renamed West Indian and Atlantic Department.

iii. Responsibility for Gibraltar has been transferred to Dependent Territories General Department (Mr J D B Shaw) to be renamed Gibraltar and General Department.

3. Responsibility for Bermuda and Bahamas has been transferred from West Indian Department to Caribbean Department (Mr C S Roberts). These two territories will also continue to be regarded as covered by the joint department arrangements.

4. Mr Laird and Mr Roberts now report to Mr D A Scott on matters relating respectively to Seychelles and British Indian Ocean Territory and to Bahamas and Bermuda.

5. Until approximately the end of July Mr Shaw will be engaged on special duties in connection with long-term administrative staffing plans for the Dependent Territories. During this period Mr I Watt will take charge of the new Gibraltar and General Department.
