if the Foreign and Commonwealth Office could provide him with briefing for his forthcoming tour.

Mr. Rippon hopes that the briefing will concentrate on Community matters and the interest in our accession of each country to be visited by Mr. Rippon. Mr. Rippon would also be grateful for personality notes on the prominent people he is likely to meet in each country; briefing on the economic and political background; and notes on particular issues unrelated to our entry to the Community, which may nevertheless crop up and on which, as a Cabinet Minister, he will be expected to comment.

It would be helpful if the briefing could reach this Office by Tuesday 29 August. Of course, I recognise that, with a tour of this length, some of it may need to be supplemented or amended later.

I am sending copies of this letter to Brian Norbury and John Hunt in the Cabinet Office.
