X According to the March 1971 census, 37.5%

(1.48 million) of a total population of 3.95

million is accommodated in housing built directly

by the government or with funds contributed by

the government; 2.17 million live in privately Jon 71

owned buildings and only 295,000 are in temporary

housing.Xof the latter, 120,000 will be

rehoused within the next six years and a

continuing programme of resettlement is intended

to give assistance to the remainder.

Government resettlement began in the early

1950s and by 1971 almost 1 million people had

been re-housed either in 23 multi-storey estates

or 15 "cottage" areas.

3. A Government low-cost housing programme

caters for families with low incomes and, since

1962, some 187,000 people have been re-housed.

Six other estates in the course of construction

243 will provide accommodation for a further 430,000.

4. Both the Hong Kong Housing Authority and the

Hong Kong Housing Society benefit from Government

loans and since 1954 the former has housed

194,000 people (and is currently building flats

for a further 41,500) whilst the latter already has

15 estates for 110,000 people and expects to
