8. Many employers provide free accommodation, subsidised

meals or food allowances, good attendance bonuses and paid

rest days as well as a Lunar New Year bonus of one month's pay.

9. Hours and conditions of work are controlled by the

Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. In December

1971, the maximum standard hours for women and young persons

were reduced to 48 hours a week. Children under the age of

14 are prohibited from working in industry and young persons

from working at night or underground.

Decause of the continuing shortage of labour, a few large

factories in the cotton-spinning sector were authorised in 1970

to employ woee at night under strictly defined conditions.

Only 7 factories employing a total of 607 woman had taken ad-

vantage of these arrangements by December 1971. A recent pro-

posal to increase the number of fact.ries covered by the ar-

rangements has been dropped.
