We can expect at least one meeting (of perhaps 2 hours) with
Chou En-lai. M. Schumann was received by Mao Tse-tung. We
shall wish to ensure that similar treatment is accorded to the
Secretary of State; but arrangements may well not be made for
him to see Mao until the last moment. The discussions with
Chinese leaders will inevitably be lengthy. This is not only
because of the need for consecutive interpretation (see I. below)
but also because the Chinese invariably wish to discuss bilateral
and international relations in great dotnil.

14. The Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Ming tombs, the
Great Well of China and an agricultural commune.

ENTERTAINMENT
This seems likely to involve:
(i) A banquet to be given by the Chinese, possibly
(ii)
by Chou En-lai.
A return dinner party for 30 or 40 to be given
by the Secretary of State. The dining room in
the Residence cannot accommodate more than 20.
The Secretary of State may wish to ask more
Chinese than would be possible if numbers were
limited to 20. On the assumption that the total
may be 30 or 40 in all it might be better for
