Sir Alco: While I was last in the Foreign Office I started these regular
contacto be@cuse I think one forower the very important role Jepan was
going to play in the Far Fast, and indeed all over the world because she
is one of the big international traders..
And indeed, when I
was in opposition before going into my present office I visited Australia
now
and saw the contacts/and the enormous amount of trade which. Japan does with
of
Australia and so in every kind / way Japan is in contact with our Commonwealth
countries with a new community in Europa and we shall have to work out ways
roally friendly
and means of having / relations , which is profitable to our partners as well
as ourselves and so this is an opportunity which I seized when I was in that
part of the world in order to have one more of these contacts which up to now
I have found very valuable.
Question:
Cortzin new factors have now emerged which may affect
\
the range of your talks. China is now out in the world body and Britain
Britain's is going into the EEC and of course / economy in many ways- and cortcinly in
Cozms of the
fer
/ strength of stirling and the balance of payments is / healthier than ever
before. Will any of these factors affect, the range of your talka with the
Japanese?
Sir Aleg: I think to the extent that we look forward to a more prosperous
anticipate
1
period ahead in this country than we hero bean able to
up to now
is always a factor whom we are talking with friends and allies and they value
a strong Britain more than they do a week one,and so this is all to the good.
I think: Japan has a very valuable role to play in Asia and outside and our
interest is to see that our frienüship is developed.
:
Quantion: Mr. Heath in his talks with President Nixon in Bermude in fact
referred to the future of the western world depending on harmony between
America, Europe and Japan. How do you see this harmony being baat brought
about?
