an unpresidented wave of robberies and attacks on people who are going about their law abiding ways in
the streets of Hong Kong. I have mentioned the
police and I'd like to mention an experience in my
own constituency in Richmond in England.
I had a very
serious mugging case the other day, very similar to
the sort of cases you are facing here in Hong Kong and
I was delighted to see the force of law caught up with the miscreants and that they were given very strong
sentences indeed as a result of the robbery of violence which occurred in my constituency, and I was
delighted to see this.
Did you discuss at all the relations with China with
Sir Alex Douglas Homes before your visit and desire
the Chinese for talks on various communication lengths between Hong Kong and China?
Obviously China was discussed.
The last time I was
here in fact. Of course, when I came through in June on a very brief stop-over on my way back from Peking, I talked at that time, as you will remember, to
Members of the Administrative and Executive Council
and to the Governor about my visit. Since my visit, of course, the Secretary of State has now been to Peking and I think he held a press conference here recently, before my arrival, on his visit.
There have been great developments over the last year with our relations with China, very exciting develop- ments. Not only have we increased the level of our representation in Peking and the Chinese have increased their level of representation in London, but we have seen firm orders for a wide range of British, Aircraft and only today there were reports of further orders for Tridents for China. We have seen moves on the communications front, discussions taking place on a telecommunications link between Hong Kong and
