Minister
As I said earlier on, the purpose of my visit was to up-date myself on the developments in Hong Kong since I was last here two years ago.
I
I have been having talks with the Governor, with Senior officials, with Members of the Legisative Council and the Executive Council, I have been talking to both elected and appointed Members of the Urban
Council, I have met City District Officers, I have been briefed in great detail on the new housing programmes announced in the very imaginative speech which the Governor made recently, I have been briefed on the moves on the education front, on the social welfare front, all of which I very much welcome. have also been able to talk to people of all walks of life in Hong Kong, on the problems of difficulties which Hong Kong faces and to hear yet again of the many achievements and many successes that have taken
place since I was last here. This enables me when I get back to London to look at Hong Kong's affairs in my responsibilities which I mentioned earlier on with first hand knowledge. I would perhaps like to take the opportunity of that question to say how important it is, in my view, for visiters to come from London to see what you are doing here. You have some very, very creditable achievements and it is only right that Hong Kong should be proud of what has been done over
the years.
It is important that Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom should know about this. Only recently the Chairman of the All part in Hong Kong Partiamentry Committee, Mr. Peter Blaker, has been appointed as an Under Secretary of State for the Army in the Ministry of Defense in the present Government. Here again is an indication of where people have been to Hong Kong then get involved. in Government in the United Kingdom, are aware of the problems and of how Hong Kong ticks. So I don't think one should
underate the value of visits by Members of Parliament
