MR ROYLE'S VISIT TO HONG KONG, NOVEMBER 1972

1. Mr Royle asked on the transcript of his final press

conference in Hong Kong on 14 November, which was sent

direct to his office, whether we had yet received the

original press cuttings promised by Hong Kong.

2. As a result of Mr Royle's earlier minute, I wrote

to take the Information Department to task for the delay

in sending the cuttings. Mr Cater has not yet replied.

I attach for the meanwhile such cuttings as we have been

able to get from newspapers in our own library. I will

submit the full set when they arrive from Mr Cater.

A.R.

3. I think the cuttings and the press conference transcript

read together give a fair and full picture of our current

interests in Hong Kong. The only misleading headline is

in the South China Morning Post, which suggests that

Mr Royle agreed to the full demands of the Heung Yee Kuk. Yes But I think we can live with that.
