Mr Royle also hopes to visit other parts of China. In Icking he expects to have discussions with Chinese Ministers. The Chinese have not yet confirmed that a visit by r Royle during the period proposed will be acceptable.

A draft stecring brief will be circulated as soon as the Chinese indicate which dates for Mr Royle's vict would be acceptable. A schedule of the supporting briefs which will be required and of the Departments responsible for their preparation is set out below. The Departments concerned will be informed as soon as the Chinese confirm the dates of Mr Royle's visit. At the same time PED will indicato when the briefs will be required by. These should be sent in final form by this date to Mr Davies, room K 248.

5. Briefs should be concise and self-contained. should not be in the form of speaking notes but should contain any necessary background. Points which are Ter Mr Royle's information only and not for use should bc clearly marked. Briefs should be prefaced by a check list (on pink paper) or the points to be made. A specimen lay-out is attached.
