PERSONAL & CONFIDENTIAL

GOVERNMENT HOUSE

HONG KONG

23rd May 1972

My der Williams,

Many thanks for your personal and confidential letter of 22nd May in which you refer to the origins of the General Chamber of Commerce seat on the Legislative Council.

I must confess that this was news to me and of course puts quite a different complexion on the matter. If this is a Royal privilege there could be no question of it being quietly terminated by agreement between yourself and myself, even on the understanding referred to in your first paragraph, and you may take it that for the time being this stands.

Meanwhile if you come across any material that throws more light on this privilege I should be glad to have it oddly enough it is not referred to in the Royal Instructions which govern the composition of the Legislative Council and which have been amended several times since 1883.

P.G. Williams Esq.
