MAO DYING OF THROAT CANCER?

N

EW YORK. -Chair-

man Mao report- edly is suffering from incurable can- cer of the throat and may die within the year, the Wall Street Journal said today. "His affliction is said

to be incurable. One

estimate is that he may not survive be- yond this year, though that is not a firm medical prog- nosis," the news- paper said in a dis- patch from Washing- ton.

**The 79-year-old

Chine se Communist Party Chairman,

who has been a chain smoker for years, has received radia- tion treatment for his illness, but it's not known if there are any plans for sur-

gery," the new spaper added.

"

The cancer report, the

newspaper said, “ori- ginates with sources who have unique ac- cess to such informa- don, and it appears to be substantially

more credible than many previous ac- counts of Mao's con- dition."

Credence

The journal also said the first reaction of **some US Govern- ment experts who have received the current report is to give it much more credence than its long list of decessors, though

pre-

it should be stressed

this one cannot be confirmed from in- dependent sources, and some other Wash- ing analysts treat it

with scepticism.”

WHAT ABOUT

THE

ELSIE?

HE Chairman of the Committee which got 50,000 people to sign the "Elsie for Legco" petition today asked the Government to explain why she was not appointed.

"Are they afraid of Mrs Elliott?" asked Dr L. K. Ding. "There must be some reason."

Dr Ding said Mrs Elliott's lan- guage might be harsh at times but "that kind of language is useful to us."

He said all Mrs Elsie Elliott's supporters, including himself, were very disappointed with the Govern- ment's decision.

"Knowing Mrs Elliott, she might not be disappointed as she may have felt her chance of being appointed to Legco not great,” Dr Ding said.

"We had hoped that the new Gov-

MacLehose, ernor, Sir Murray would be more responsive to feel- ings of common people but

were wrong.

Elected

we

"There were four people appoint- ed to Legco and it is not too much to ask for at least an elected Ur- ban Councillor to be appointed."

Dr Ding said he was not aiming at an individual attack but those appointed were not too active as a whole."

The Government yesterday an-

nounced the appointment of three appointed Urban Councillors - Mr Roger Lobo, Mrs Joyce Symons and Mr James Wu to the Legis- lative Council.

Singapore bans

China medicine

SINGAPORE: Health authorities today banned sales of a China- made medicine known as Lu Shen Wan, widely used by Chinese here for curing inflamed conditions of the throat and mouth,

A Health Ministry statement said the preparation manufactured by Lai Yung Shang of Shanghai was found to contain 5.92 per cent of arsenic and is therefore toxic and should not be taken."

People holding stocks were asked to surrender them to the Ministry.
