The following is the state of play regarding visits with which Far Eastern Department are concerned:

OUTWARD VISITS

Visit to Japan by the Minister for Industry

2.

Sir John Eden's visit to Tokyo, which was arranged for

5 11 September, has been postponed at the request of the Prime Minister. No new dates have been fixed.

Proposed visit to Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong by the

Secretary of State

3. No firm dates have been fixed for the Secretary of State's visit to Tokyo next year for Ministerial talks; please see Mr Graham's minute of 2 September. He may go there on his way to or from Canberra for the SEATO meeting which now looks like taking place on 27/28 June. Alternatively he may combine a visit to Tokyo with the visit to Thailand which he will be paying in February in attendance on The Queen. In either case, we hope that the Secretary of State will pay at least a one day visit to Seoul from Tokyo.

4. The Secretary of State has decided that he ought, if at all possible, to fit in a visit to Hong Kong on his way to or from Canberra.

Proposed Visit by former Japanese Minister of Finance

5. The Chancellor of the Exchequer's invitation to Mr Fukuda to visit Britain was not conveyed to him owing to a Cabinet reshuffle from which he emerged as Foreign Minister. Mr Fukuda will accompany The Emperor to Britain from 5-8 October and there may be an opportunity for a short meeting then with the Secretary of State.

6. Mr Mizuta, the new Finance Minister, will be in London for the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 10 on 15 and 16 September.
