Will you please refer to correspondence ended in
Hugh Norman-Walker's letter to me No CR 1/1951/71 of
7 June about the possibility of a visit to Hong Kong
by the Secretary of State next year.
I am afraid that we shall have to revise these
proposals since the SEATO meeting in Canberra is now
likely to take plage at the end of June (27/28 June) and
the Secretary of State does not feel that he could
State
manage a trip to the Far East in April followed by
another one two months later. He would however still
be very ready to combine a visit to Hong Kong with the
later visit to Australia (for the SEATO meeting) and
New Zealand and I am writing to enquire whether such a
proposal would be convenient for you. Such a visit
could be fitted in either on the way to or from
Canberra.
I very much regret the necessity for making this change
hope
in plans and I let that the University authorities will
not feel unduly put out: the proposals were in any
event always subject to the Secretary of State's other
commitments. I do not know whether those authorities
would still wish to invite a Minister for the opening
of their Science Centre in June but it might be a little
