I am afraid that we have kept you waiting rather
a long time for a reply to your letter of 7 June
about the opening of the Science Centre at the
Chinese University.
You will now have received the Secretary of
State's telegram telling you of his proposal to
visit Hong Kong on 13/15 February and you will have
gathered from it that the idea of his coming to Hong
Kong in April for the opening of the Science Centre
is no longer a starter.
I am accordingly dropping you this line simply
to let you know that we are still hoping to arrange
for a Minister to attend the opening and as soon as
I can let you have any concrete information I will
do so.
I am sorry that you and the University
authorities have been inconvenienced in this way,
particularly since you agreed at our request to
change the date of the opening.
However as you
will understand the movements of the Secretary of
State are always liable to alteration at short
hotice and I am glad that you made this clear to the
Vice Chancellor in the first place.
