Hong Kong:

The go-ahead has been given for an estimated HK$ 24m ($3.94m) terminal expansion programme at Kai Tak International Airport, and work is scheduled to begin in October 1972. The work, which forms the first phase of a planned HK$ 117m ($ 19.2m) expansion programme, will take about three years to complete and will increase the airport handling capacity from the present 2,200 passengers an hour to 3,200. The project calls for the extention of the high-capacity transport pier which will provide three more aircraft parking bays; additional airside waiting areas; departure concourse and restaurant.

International passengers handled at Kai Tak Airport in the 1970-71 financial year totalled 2,385,972 (excluding transit), an increase of 20.9%. International civil aircraft movements were up 18.3% to 47,713 and cargo rose by 18.6% to 62,264 tonnes. During the year work has been progressing on the HK$ 150m ($24.6m) runway extension to give A an overall length of 11,130 ft. El/HKG - 3.12.71
