Dear Mr Cowley

We spoke briefly about the contents of your letter of 28 June to Trensman about the question of British ships registered in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is one of some 170 ports of British registry outside the UK which deal with the registration of British ships. Each of these ports maintain its own register of ships and records of such registrations and subsequent changes are notified to the office of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen at Cardiff I understand from this office that the total tonnage on the Hong Kong register amounted to 641,365 gross tonRegistration fees are once and for all payments but fees for transfer of registration and mortgage are received by the Registrar at the port where the vessel is registered. Survey fees are payable at the port where the survey takes place.

Yours sincerely
