So far as acceptance of particular items of equipment are concerned this is a matter for the Hong Kong Government as at presont and it is for them to decide whether the equipment meets the rule requirements, We do not seek to control this aspect here and it is probably inevi- table that they would be more likely to find Japanese equipment accept able than we have reuson to do.

(b) and (c) of the 15th paragraph of the Director of Marine's letter of 5 May scoms unobjectionable. Though we may perhaps be rather less flexible than Hong Kong, we adopt the same sort of line and do not necessarily insist on replacement of "non-approved" equipment on ships being transferred to UK registry.
