REGISTRY No. 51

My Laird

UNDERGROUND RAILWAY, HONG KONG

1.

After drafting my minute of 22 September on this subject, John Hyde, G&IPD, telephoned to say he had received copies of an exchange of correspondence between Donald Kerr of COI and George Curry of the RIA in which the former agreed to discuss COI participation in a publicity campaign designed to promote British interest in the underground railway contract. This correspondence is now attached.

2.

A meeting at COI is suggested during the week beginning 4 October. The DTI representative will be Ken Price and he has agreed to make arrangements for me to attend also. Curry's PS. is important and, in any publicity project, care must be taken to ensure that there is no shadow of a suggestion that British firms have any proprietary right to the contract. Price assures me that despite the implication in Curry's letter, all concerned including Ross of EGCI, understand this and that publicity requested of COI will be a projection of UK industrial capability dealt with generally but including the field of underground railways.
