In addition to giving you a rather brief background to the Hong Kong Chinese in Britain, I propose at the end of my talk to say a few words about the services which the Hong Kong Government Office in London provides for the Hong Kong Chinese population in Britain. In general, I will only give a summary of the main points which I feel are significant and leave it to you to develop any particular aspects which interest you or the audiences to which you speak by way of questions at the end.
The main characteristics of the Chinese
in Britain are as follows:-

They are predominantly either Hong Kong-born or Hong Kong residents born in China. Apart from students, only a small number of residents are Chinese from Singapore, Malaysia and elsewhere.
In common with other immigrants, no accurate figures are available of the numbers of Hong Kong Chinese in Britain until next year's census. Our own estimate of the number is between 40 and 45,000.

Of this number, some 5,000 are students, of whom the greatest number are studying nursing and various G. C. E. courses. number engaged on courses of higher education is about 1,000.

The remainder of the Chinese population is predominantly employed in the restaurant trade and in a growing number of Chinese provision shops and other small business catering mainly to the Chinese population.
