NOTHING TO BE WRITTEN IN THIS MARGIN
necessary to exempt a British subject from
deportation. The enclosed Ordinance provides that
a United Kingdom belonger who has been ordinarily
resident in Hong Kong for a continuous period of not
less than 7 years has the right of entry into the
Colony at any time unless a deportation order is in
force against him; no conditions of stay may be
imposed on him; and he can only be deported in the
interest of the security of Hong Kong or for political
reasons affecting the relations of HMG in the
United Kingdom with another country.
The Ordinance also gives legal recognition to
the special position in Hong Kong of longstanding residents who are wholly or partly of the Chinese
race and provides that they may only be deported in
the same way as United Kingdom belongers (see the
fifth paragraph \of this letter).
