IMMIGRATION BILL 1971
Single Code To Replace Existing Immigration And Deportation Ordinances
**
For file.
ANG
16.7.711
The Immigration Bill 1971 is published in the Government Gazette today
(Friday) for public information before its introduction into the Legislative
Council.
The Bill seeks to consolidate and revise the existing law relating
to immigration and deportation.
If passed by the Legislative Council, it will replace the Immigration
(Control and Offences) Ordinance, the Deportation (British Subjects) Ordinance
and the Deportation of Aliens Ordinance.
The Bill continues the distinction between Hong Kong belongers, who
will have the right to live in Hong Kong and to come and go at will, and
immigrants.
Under the existing law, the only persons recognized as Hong Kong
belongers are those who possess documentary proof of birth here.
The Bill proposes that, in future, in addition to persons who are born
in Hong Kong, persons who are British subjects by naturalization in Hong Kong,
and the wife and children of a British subject born or naturalized in Hong Kong
should also be belongers.
