I am grateful to you for your letter of 7 January
detailing the recommendations of the Housing Board for
provision of housing for the period up to 1976.

indeed an ambitious one and I am pleased to see that Indeed an ambitious
the Board proposes to start including in the scheme
squatters living on land not required for development.
You state that the total of squatters living on land not
required for development is 317,000/in the urban areas
tmis
of Hong Kong and Kowloon, of which it is proposed to
house 30,000. From this I assume that housing for the
balance 287,000 of such squatters will not be provided
in the period up to 1976 and that this figure should be
added to the 1040,000 for whom housing is recommended
to obtain the total number requiring re-housing. I
should be glad to receive your confirmation that this
interpretation of your figures is correct.
I appreciate that a proportion of the existing permanent
housing is unsatisfactory owing to its age and to dilap-
idation and that this will require to be replaced with
the result that the figures you show for proposed new
construction are larger than the apparent number of
people requiring re-housing.
