1. The attached Parliamentary Question by Mr John Rankin
about the squatters in Hong Kong has been put down for oral
answer on 21 June. The Parliamentary Office have asked
for the reply by the weekend so that it can be sent to
Mr Royle on Sunday. I am therefore sending it direct to
Mr Howell.

4. The Government of Hong Kong has undertaken a continuous
"crash" housing programme since 1954.
Well over 40 per
cent of the population now live in Government or Government-
Aided housing. The Housing Board has recommended that
over the next 6 years housing should be provided as
follows

360,000 persons
120,000
Low Cost Housing & Resettlement 560,000
1,040,000 persons
The resettlement commitment over the period is put at
500,000.
