Appointments to the Bar Judiciary from the

Bar in Hong Kong

Please refer to your letter of 10 December

(Your Ref. SA 207/333/01 ) about pension arrangemerats for judges pashouted to the Supreme Court Bench from the local Bar. 2. I am most grateful for the very comprehensive

lave

information you supplied concerning the West

Indies' arrangements. However, there are still

two other possible precedents which I feel would

be worth investigating before proceeding any

further.

3. The first of these is Nigeria, where

occasional appointments were made from the Bar

(in one case, of an ex-patriate), long before

there was any question of pursuing a deliberate

localisation policy.

if.

In the second case, payments of terminal

benefits to Judges appointed from the Bar to the

Bench were also made in respect of Judges of

the Central African Federation.

5.

I should be most grateful for any

information you may be able to provide on the

above cases.
