IMMEDIATE ACTION ON TYPHOON RELIEF
Allocations From Community Relief Trust Fund
The Social Welfare Department made a number of substantial allocations
from the Community Relief Trust Fund today for use as immediate relief in
cases of distress caused by Typhoon Rose.
The allocations include $500,000 to the Agriculture and Fisheries
Department, $200,000 to the New Territories Administration, and $150,000
to the Resettlement Department. The Social Welfare Department is holding
back $150,000 to be used in connection with cases of distress within its
own sphere of responsibility.
Among other things, the allocations will be used by the various
departments concerned for grants to repair or replace fishing vessels lost
or damaged during the typhoon, for grants or loans to repair or replace
stock houses and farm buildings, livestock and crops, and the replacement
or repair of squatter huts, squatter boats, and resettlement cottages.
Mr. Chou Ting-hsun, Acting Assistant Director (General) of Social
Welfare, said in addition, the Community Relief Trust Fund would be available
to dependents of deceased crew members of the Macau ferry Fatshan, and would
help with burial expenses. Social Welfare Department officers are already
investigating details of each case.
The Government announced yesterday that $1 million had been paid
into the Community Relief Trust Fund, and it was this money that had been
allocated, Mr Chou said.
