TYPHOON VICTIMS GIVEN $1,750,000
From Community Relief Trust Fund
*******
A total of $1,750,000 has already been given to individual members
of the public who suffered as a result of Typhoon Rose.
This sum has been drawn from money made available to the Community
Relief Trust Fund by the government.
Last Wednesday, the day following the typhoon, the government
announced that it had made available to the Fund $1 million to provide money
quickly to help people in distress and that it was ready to arrange further
allocations from public funds for this purpose.
Subsequently, this amount was increased to $2.5 million to meet
the immediate needs of typhoon victims.
Commenting on the extensive damage resulting from Typhoon Rose
and the estimated cost to public funds, a government spokesman said today:
"In addition to the $2.5 million so far made available for relief and
rehabilitation, the government estimates that it will have to make available
at least a further $4.5 million to meet the cost of remedial repairs to
public roads and similar public works.
"This is a preliminary estimate and the full cost of the repair
work is not yet known.
