DEFENCE BOMBSHELL

INGKONG IS to be asked to pay many more millions of dollars a year towards

ilitary defence costs, informed sources said today.

A new agreement between Hongkong and Britain is now under consideration in London.

And details will probably bd released the next few

months.

Hongkong's annual contribution under the last four-year defence agreement ran to about $58 million a year.

A massive rise is predicted under the new agreement.

This could mean Hongkong paying Britain another $10 to $14 million a year.

An increase in also expected in payments towards a services* capital works programme.

SECRECY

Under the old agreement, this was about $30 million spread over the four-year period. There is tight secrecy at the moment on all

details of the new agreement and no-one in Hongkong is prepared to say much.

It's believed that Commander British Forces, Lt-Gen Sir Richard War, will hold talks on the new defence agreement during his

current visit to Britain.
