Institute(s) to concentrate on technician training at the lower level. A

one-year basic craft course bridging the gap between technical or vocational

school and industry followed by guided industrial experience coupled with

part-time study would enable industry to play a part in the training and

possibly through the Industrial Committees to contribute towards the cost of

the basic courses. The current arrangement whereby electrical industrial tech-

nician work has been transferred to the Morrison Hill Technical Institute but

the mechanical engineering technicians' work is retained in the College is a

very unbalanced arrangement particularly in view of the polytechnic development

and it is recommended that this work should also be transferred to the

Institute.

3. FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS

3.1 The next technical institute will be at Tsuen Wan and is expected to be

ready during the period 1974/75. It is scheduled to offer electrical and

mechanical trades courses together with some technician work, business studies

and instruction in textiles including dyeing and finishing. The present

textile work at the Morrison Hill Technical Institute is ultimately scheduled

to move into this new institute when it is ready.

3.2 Meanwhile it is proposed to further develop the Morrison Hill Technical

Institute by providing 6,000 sq ft of additional space in the shape of a new

floor on top of the workshop wing. Also by converting the textile mechanics

workshop into a machine shop and a mechanics laboratory workshop into an ele-

trical installation shop. Apart from the building cost of approximately

(HK)350,000, there will be a need for approximately $(HK)626,000 for equip-

ment.

In addition, further equipment is needed in the existing laboratories

and workshops to bring them up to the standard required for the carrying out of

its present work plus the mechanical engineering technicians' work. This

totals just over $1 (HK) million. Neither of these figures for equipment
