ANGLO-JAPANESE CONSULTATIONS

LONDON JUNE 1971

JOINT

COMMUNIQUE

His Excellency Mr Kiichi Aichi, Foreign Minister of Japan, accompanied by Mrs Aichi, visited the United Kingdom from 9 - 12 June 1971, at the invitation of the Right Honourable Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, for the ninth round of the regular Anglo-Japanese consultations.

Mr Aichi was received by the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Edward Heath. He also called upon the Right Honourable John Davies, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. Mr and Mrs Aichi were entertained to a theatre and supper party by the Right Honourable Anthony Barber, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Mrs Barber.

Mr Aichi held discussions with Sir Alec Douglas-Home on a wide range of topics of mutual interest. Mr Aichi, who

had just visited Paris for the OECD Ministerial meeting, expressed the hope that the small group for trade and related matters established at the meeting would further strengthen co-operation among OECD countries. Sir Alec Douglas-Home gave an account of his recent visit to the NATO meeting of Ministers at Lisbon and described the useful exchange of views which the Ministers had had on problems currently facing the alliance, including East-West relations and the prospects for mutual and balanced force reductions in Europe.

The two Ministers discussed in detail recent developments in the international situation in both Europe and Asia. Sir Alec Douglas-Home gave an account of the negotiations for Britain's entry into the EEC. Both Ministers agreed that the best means of restoring peace and stability in Indo-China was through a negotiated settlement. In South-East Asia the Ministers welcomed the signs of greater understanding and closer regional co-operation which have been apparent since the last meeting.
