Trade Policy Department Foreign and Commonwealth Office London S.W.1

15 December, 1970.

Further to our telephone conversation last week, I now have pleasure in enclosing some information in respect of our dependent territories etc., requested by your Government.

This is as follows:

(a) Notes on a number of trade questions.

(b) Details of principal exports and imports, G.N.P.,

etc.

(c) Notes on Exchange Control.

(d) Notes on the constitutional positions of the

Dependent Territories.

We feel that this information should provide you with the details requested in questions 1, 3, 4 and 5 of the list which you handed to Mr. Kemmis of the Department of Trade and Industry. As regards question i, you will observe that, according to the replies given to question (iv) of (a) above, Certificates of Origin are not generally provided by most dependent territories whose exports tend to be limited in both quantity and variety. The question of providing certificates of origin, as required under the UNCTAD scheme, would certainly need to be examined in due course!

We are at present collecting the individual tariffs required by your question 2 and hope to be able to provide. most of the se before the end of the month. prove to be not immediately available in Whitehall, however If any of them we will probably have to obtain copies of outstanding tariffs from the territories concerned and I am afraid that this may take some time.

Mr. Tetsuya Endo, Japanese Embassy, 46, Grosvenor Street, London, WIX OBA.
