EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN AT NIGHT IN HONG KONG

Thank you for letting me see Sir Hugh Norman- Walker's letter of 10 August. The only complaint which may give rise to repercussions here is that from the Cotton Industry Workers' General Union, which is affiliated to the International Textile Workers' Federation. But I saw Mr Charles Ford, the new Secretary of this organisation, recently (he has succeeded our old friend Mr Greenhalgh) and explained to him, among other things, the position in relation to night work for women in Hong Kong and he expressed himself as satisfied with what was being done. He could still of course come under pressure from his Executive but I would not rate this very high. The letter does not say whether any increased number of women have come forward for night work since the conditions were revised but I should be able to clear this up when I go to Hong Kong in November. I will at the same time be having a close look at the question of inspection.
