The second course would be to refer as originally proposed merely to crimes of violence, without definition, but to add the proviso referred to above that only those sentenced to at least six months imprison- ment would be disbarred.
9
The third course is to delete any reference to crimes of violence from the Schedule. These can be added in the future if the need arises. It seems likely that this could then be done with less adverse comment than their inclusion now.
10
Honourable Members will be asked to advise whether the
bill should be amended:
(a)
as suggested in paragraph 7; or
(b)
as suggested in paragraph 8; or
(c)
as suggested in paragraph 9.
11
On balance the course suggested in paragraph 9 is commended, as if circumstances did arise in which this safeguard were necessary, there could be no justifiable criticism of the addition to the Schedule.
(The Commissioner of Labour (Mr R. M. HETHERINGTON) and Crown Counsel (Mr J. F. MATHEWS) will attend before the Council for the discussion of this item).
