(iii) British Council
Authority has been given for a much-needed
British Council Officer to assist the single
officer at present in post.
(iv) General Assessment
Australia is one of our most important trading
partners, and British investment has been higher
than in any other country. Taking this into
account, the information services in Australia
were pioneers in the targetting of commercial
publicity, and the entire information operation
was put on a commercial footing. Some doubt is
felt about the wisdom of this move and there are
indications that in the long term the absence
of traditional 'prestige' activity might be
detrimental not only to our overall position but
to the commercial interests which we are
endeavouring to promote. It is hoped to correct
this tendency, which however need not involve the
post in any appreciable additional expenditure.
On the other hand no cuts can easily be envisaged,
and in the meantime the strengthening of the
British Council representation is to be welcomed.
