DISCUSSIONS WITH SIR DAVID TRENCH AND MR MURRAY MACLEHOSE
1. Sir D Trench and Mr MacLehose will be meeting in London on Wednesday 9 June. They will have lunch together and the whole of the afternoon for talks.
2.
Arrangements have been made for Sir D Trench to see Mr Reddaway at 10 am on Thursday 10 June and Mr Ritchie at 12.30 pm on Friday 11 June (Mr Ritchie will give the Governor lunch). Mr Bottomley has suggested a meeting (to which representatives of DTI would be invited) for a discussion on textiles and generalised preferences. He has suggested 17 or 18 June but Sir D Trench, while agreeing to the talk, has not yet committed himself to a meeting on one of those days.
3. Arrangements have been made for Sir D Trench to see
I have discussed Mr Royle at 11 am on Thursday 10 June. this with Mr Logan and he has told me that Mr Royle will see Sir D Trench by himself for about three quarters of an hour. May I suggest that, if convenient to you both, we should arrange for Sir D Trench to see Sir L Monson immediately after his meeting with Mr Royle. At, say, 12 noon (or later if desired) Mrilford, Mr Gaminara and myself together with Mr MacLehose could assemble in Sir L Monson's room for a discussion of the following matters:-

The composition of the Executive and Legislative Councils from 1 January 1972 (we have suggested to Sir D Trench that temporary appointments for, say, 6 months should be made thus giving Mr MacLehose time in which to make up his own mind about the composition of the 2 Councils on a more permanent basis).
(b) The defence contribution (copies of the Governor's
telegrams nos. 367 and 368 are attached).

All the back papers will of course be available for reference at the meeting.
