3. On (ii) the suggestion that if Princess Alexandra visits

Hong Kong she should also pay a visit to Malaysia was made by

the Princess herself after she had been unable to extend her

itinerary to visit Malaysia when she visited Singapore and

Thailand in August 1969. The Governor of Hong Kong has

informally indicated a preference for September for the visit

to the Colony. If there were to be a State Visit by The Queen

and the Duke of Edinburgh to Malaysia in January 1971, this

would inevitably detract from the value of a visit by

Princess Alexandra only four months before. But if the visit

of The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were to take place

towards the end of 1971 there would be no problem.

4. I recommend that the Committee should consider, in the

light of the timing of The Queen's visit to Malaysia, whether

Princess Alexandra should still be advised to visit that

country if she goes to Hong Kong near to the time of the main Royal Visit, the area
