Your Excellency,

Will wish to be aware of Mr. MacLehose's Chinese name which was composed hurriedly yesterday afternoon by my staff in ccnsultation with staff of the Information Services Department.

We understand Mr. MacLehose used the Chinese name when he was in Focchow. However, we thought that the middle character is inappropriate as it means "a shoe or to act on". In view of this we have taken the liberty to alter it to which means "reasonable and in accordance with principle".

Subject to Mr. MacLehose's concurrence, we propose that (Mak common surname) 1 (HO- vast and magnanimous) should be adopted officially; we have in fact used it in D.I.S.'s press release yesterday. However should Mr. MacLehose wish to adhere to the one he used in Foochow, I am sure we can change it accordingly.
